Hand Painted Grandfather Clock Makeover

September 5, 2024 · Furniture Refinishing

I found this old clock on the Marketplace and I knew I needed to paint it! I had no intention of actually using the clock ! I just loved the look of it and thought it would look great in our living room.

I wanted to update the look of the clock a bit and so in order to do that, I had to remove the clock mechanism and also the top part of the clock. I then painted the whole clock with chalk paint.

Before

Preparation

I needed to do a few things first in order to prepare the clock to be chalk painted. I knew straight away that I wanted to remove the clock mechanism. My intention was not to actually use the clock, but to have it in the room for decoration. Removing the mechanism also allowed for an update on this piece.

Painting

I used Rustoleum Chalk Paint in chiffon cream for this makeover. Chalk paint is water based and therefore I didn’t feel like I needed to tape off all of the glass on this clock. Once I applied the paint, it was easy to use a wet rag to wipe off the excess paint off of the glass.

As I was painting out the piece, it became clear to me that I needed to remove the insides of the top of the clock as well and paint the top part of the clock to match the rest. I think that doing so, definitley was the right choice to make!

Distress

I also wanted to have this clock lightly distressed. After the paint coats were applied, I simply took a 300 grit sanding sponge to lightly sand the round corners and all of the detailing in the piece to help the details stand out.

Next was to paint out the clock mechanism on the top part of the clock and wow, what a big difference in doing so!

So happy with the results of this clock. Very simple steps applied actually. By just removing the clock mechanism and by painting out the top part of the clock and distressing a little, the clock as a whole new look!
