Plastic Play Kitchen Makeover

July 12, 2022 · Furniture Refinishing

I have had this old plastic play kitchen for probably over 10 years now! It’s still in good shape and wanted to give it a makeover for my son’s playroom in the basement.

Steps

I started by cleaning it really good to get all the grime and dirt off it.

Make sure you have all your supplies ready including painters tape, drop cloth or plastic garbage bags, plastic gloves and your spray paint. I tried a couple of options that did not work, including a chalk spray paint that did not cover well at all!

Priming

  • I recommend using a high quality primer and spray paint combo. You will get amazing coverage ! With this project I went from a dark green and burgundy color to white, so great coverage was absolutely necessary.
Paint and Primer
  • Here is the link to the spray paint I used.  This one is a primer and paint in one and it also bonds to plastic!
  • After cleaning thoroughly, I chose to tape off the parts I did not want painted white. I opted not to completely take the whole kitchen apart. This decision will be up to you.
  • I personally am really bad at taking things apart and then putting them back to together ! I personally found it easier to tape off.

Painting

  • Please make sure to spray in a well ventilated area and to hold the can away from the project because if you spray too close you could end up with splotches and drips on your project. I have found this out the hard way!
  • I also make sure to periodically shake the can. Also be sure you shake the can vigorously before you begin at least for a few minutes.

  • I do not like a lot of complicated steps to a project. I just threw down the garage bags and started painting.  I did however have to do a few coats of the spray paint to achieve a nice white coverage.
  • The only thing about spray paint is that you do need to make sure each coat has been given enough time to dry.

Silver Paint

The last step was to use silver paint to paint the parts I wanted to look like silver or stainless steel. I found adding these finishing touches really made it look amazing in the end. HERE is the link to the paint I used to paint out the silver parts of the play kitchen.

I love the results of my spray paint makeover on the plastic play kitchen!
